IN MEMORY OF RICK HURULA

Rick was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan on February 11th, 1954. He was a varsity swimmer in high school and loved endurance motorcycle racing. Throughout his life, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, water and snow skiing, and golf. After graduating from Michigan State, he moved to Arizona and started his land development career in the construction industry as an operations manager for a pipeline contracting company. Rick received his MBA at ASU and as a huge Spartan fan, also became a Sun Devil fan, calling his own mascot “Spartky.” He was later hired as Manager of Construction Services for a nationwide engineering firm and then moved on to become Vice President of Development for Stardust Companies, a private real estate and land development company. After that, he joined HILGARTWILSON in August of 2012 and became our Director of Construction Services.

As Director of Construction Services, Rick led the HILGARTWILSON construction management team and was responsible for developing residential communities which have become home to thousands of Arizonans. In addition, he and his team have provided construction management for numerous public works projects, including replacement of the entire Town of Miami’s wastewater system, construction of five miles of waterline and a pump station for the City of Phoenix and two golf course owners, and construction of six miles of large-diameter sewer line for EPCOR to serve all of western Glendale. Rick was always available to help our young, as well as more seasoned engineers, by providing value engineering and constructability reviews on design projects. Rick started the Construction Services Group for HILGARTWILSON, and grew the team from its initial staff of one (himself) to a professional staff of eight prior to his passing. His construction expertise was considered unparalleled in the Valley and his reputation played a key part in the growth of HILGARTWILSON.

Rick had a heart of gold. He loved and cared for his friends and colleagues like family, and felt very fortunate to have those connections. We are forever grateful for our time with Rick and his dedication to HILGARTWILSON.
